About Us

Barrow Hill Pre-school is a nursery setting in the heart of St John’s wood. We accept busy 2 year old funding and working family funding (parents/carers must apply for this through the childcare choices website) and universal 3-4 year old funding.

The pre-school's unique focus is on nurturing and educating young minds. Also creating individual and independent learners who are

ready, when it’s time, to move on to primary school. Our setting has very strong bonds with our local schools.

Our ethos is learning through play.

Supporting your child’s learning and development

We aim to work together with you to best meet your child’s individual needs.

Our little nursery opened over 25 years ago. It began as a mother and toddler group, run by local parents. Now we run pre-school/nursery part time sessions, as well as full time sessions, term time only. We are a small nurturing environment. The children and families that attend our setting form very close bonds with all members of staff as well as each other.

We hire the room through WCC who are our landlords.

The nursery is very special to us, as the manager and staff members own children attended the setting when they were young.

Barrow hill pre-school is part of the Early Year’s Alliance. It is their policies, procedures and guidelines we adhere too. We hold a charity status. We are named on the charity commission and are an incorporated company on companies’ house. We are Ofsted registered and our latest Ofsted report is available to read or download from the Ofsted website. We have very good relationships with our local schools and we work closely with them during the children’s transition at the end of their time with us.

Barrow Hill Pre-School Curriculum

Our aims at Barrow Hill Pre-school: By the end of our summer term, we would like our children to be working towards

achieving the following:

Our aims for two year olds:

We are strong believers in learning through play. We strive for all children to

learn and develop in a fun, play based environment. Delivering exciting

activities and experiences led by qualified, experienced and sensitive

practitioners. We aim for our 2 year olds to be secure or working towards their individual goals in the 3 prime areas of the early years foundation stage National curriculum.

  • Communication and language

  • Physical Development

  • Personal social and emotional

Our aims for 3-4 year olds:

We now begin to introduce the specific areas of the curriculum to a child's learning

and development. We introduce these 4 areas, once a child is secure in the 3

prime areas.

  • Literacy Development

  • Understanding the world

  • Expressive art and design

  • Math development

All learning and development throughout these areas are delivered through

fun play based activities. We follow the child's interests to help engage

in meaningful play. Our qualified practitioners continually make observations and

assessments of each individual child's progress and plan for the next steps to

ensure development in all areas or to provide extra support where needed.

Our aims for 4-5 year olds

Our Vision/Mission is to inspire curiosity and independence through meaningful play experiences to nurture a lifelong love of learning. By the age of 4-5 years old we aim to be confident, capable and resilient and ready for the school transition.

The term safeguarding is used more broadly and according to the latest government guidance 'Working Together to Safeguard Children', it means:

  • Protecting children from maltreatment.

  • Preventing impairment of children’s health or development.

  • Ensuring the children grow up in circumstances consistent with them provision of safe and effective care.

  • Taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.

Fundraising

Barrow Hill is a registered Charity: 1150984

We are always looking at ways to raise money to help provide resources that enhance the children’s learning. This can include anything from new equipment, toys, educational equipment, trips and events etc. We are a small charity led setting and we try to keep our fees as low as possible, for our parents and families. To achieve this, we rely heavily on termly fundraising activities. We hold a spring time cake sale, which is a time to all get together over cake and treats. It’s always well attended and supported by our local community and parents/families old and new. Our big fundraising event is our summer term fundraising. We hold an annual community fete. This

event is always greatly anticipated by the children/families and local community. It is always well attended and supported by our local business and companies. We even had the lord mayor of Westminster attending this year. We are always looking for any ideas for fundraising, so please free to share us.
